It’s my firm belief that we are all born creative beings. When we are kids, the world encourages us to be artists and to express ourselves creativity. Then something shifts, and we are told that making stuff with our hands is a hobby or a pastime, but never a viable career option.

From my own experience running a handmade business, organizing the Make It shows and hearing the stories from Make It University students, I know for a fact that it IS possible to run a successful, creative business.

Filming Make It Happen has been such an incredible experience so far. I absolutely love hearing the stories of how people have gotten over their fears and turned their passion into a full time gig. It’s amazing how so many of us share the same fears, doubts and frustrations, but it’s encouraging that they don’t have to dictate the direction of our lives. We can be scared AND still go for it!

Neil and I are thrilled to share another clip of our Make It Happen documentary with you. We sat down with Neil’s brother, Juno award winner Dan Mangan, and asked him about creativity and childhood. He has some amazing insight I know you will love.

This last weekend at Make It Edmonton, we couldn’t walk across the floor of the Enjoy Centre without someone asking us about Make It Happen! How to Succeed in the Handmade World and our Indiegogo campaign.

While feeling the love for the documentary was fantastic, listening to the stories of different Makies was truly inspiring (“Makies” are the rockstars that sell at Make It).

You see, for most of the vendors at the show, they never expected to be living the life they lead. Like so many in the handmade world, most had stories of falling into their creative businesses almost by accident.

Some went to art school while others developed their own style and technique as a creative outlet. Many had day jobs that became unfulfilling. Others had children and found that running a small creative business gave them the flexibility they needed to balance family and career. Some came from creative families and always knew they would be in the arts while others didn’t discover their creative passion or talent until their later years.

The powerful thing that united all of the designers, crafters and artisans at Make It Edmonton was that they all dared to take the leap. They put themselves on the line and made themselves truly vulnerable by asking the public to buy creative products that are an extension of themselves.

There is true bravery in this kind creative vulnerability.

Have you ever told yourself “I’ll do that when I have this” or “the timing just isn’t right but when it is I’ll start doing insert dream here.” Problem with these good intentions is that they are just intentions. The perfect time usually never comes. The stars don’t align and the damn ducks just won’t line up! This is ultimately how we get stuck lives we don’t love and avoid taking chances.

Following your dreams doesn’t get any easier the longer you wait. Talking yourself out of the things you really want to do gets super easy as more and more time passes. Then you get to a point when you let the dream go because you have successfully convinced yourself you couldn’t have even done it if you tried. *Big sigh*

This is sad. You have SO much potential and so much amazing creativity to share with the world, that to squander is not only bad for you personally, it’s also selfish to the rest of us. Think about your favorite musicians, artists, writers, designers, dancers, and performers. What if they decided that the timing just wasn’t right, or that they needed to do this, that and the other thing before they went for their dreams? Our world would be a grim, dark place and not very much fun.

What I have learned in my own experience, is that the timing is never right and things rarely go according to plan. But the most important thing you do is to simply START. Just do one little thing that fulfills that desire to be creative and brings you closer to your dream. Maybe it’s enrolling in a pottery class, signing up for a craft show or finally listing your jewelry on Etsy. You will know by how good it makes you feel inside.

You might be really scared at first but the more you push yourself outside your comfort zone the easier it will get and more natural it will feel. This doesn’t mean you won’t still be nervous but you will realize that having butterflies is actually pretty awesome. It just means you are alive!

Why you need to do what scares you

Let me set the stage. You are going about you regular ol’ business and then all of a sudden a big, amazing, exciting opportunity presents itself. POW! Since you’re someone who wants to make their dreams come true, you say YES! Although you know in your heart you must do it, there is no denying the healthy dose of fear that come along with stepping up to the challenge.

Fear is a tricky and complicated fellow. We know that we must experience it from time to time in order to grow and make amazing things happen in our lives. But, it sometimes feels so uncomfortable that avoiding situations that induce too much fear can seem appealing.

So how should you handle deciding what to do and not to do? When should you face fear head on and when should you take the safe, more comfortable route? One of my favorite books is Susan Jeffer’s, Feel the Fear, and Do it Anyways. This incredible book demonstrates the importance of venturing outside our comfort zone even though it might feel like crap some of the time.

I was challenged to face my own fear of public speaking last week when I was asked to speak at Pecha Kucha. Growing up I was always very shy and even though I have worked hard to overcome my introverted ways, they still are very prevalent when it comes to public speaking. I knew speaking at Pecha Kucha was a fantastic opportunity because it was at the Enjoy Centre where our upcoming Make It show will be help next month so it would be an opportunity to promote. It was also a chance for me to spread my message of the importance of doing what you love to a captive audience of 120 people. But still, I was tempted many times to bail in order to not feel the nasty fear!

Luckily I was able to share the stage with my main squeeze, Neil Mangan, but I was still a ball of nerves the week leading up to our talk. The format of Pecha Kucha is 20 slides/20 seconds a slide and since Neil and I were presenting together I only had to speak for 3.5 minutes…long enough to scare the crap out of me!

Right before I went on stage, despite my racing heart and sweaty palms, I had this voice in my head gently say, “you were born to do this and it will be ok.” I know admitting to having voices in my head sounds a bit crazy, but I am sure I am not the only one! Hearing this affirmation immediately calmed me down and made me realize that yes, I WAS born to do this and it will be ok.

Getting on that stage and delivering a message I so believed in was unbelievably empowering. I felt strong, inspired and of service to all the people in the audience. During intermission at least a dozen people came up to Neil and I am expressed how much they enjoyed our talk and resonated with our message. It felt SO amazing and to think that if I had let fear win I would have missed that magical experience.

My advice to you is to do the things that scare you because that’s where the magic happens. Better to have sweaty palms, a knot in your stomach and a racing heart than to miss out on life.

How your thoughts determine the success of your business

You probably have probably been hearing the saying ‘you are what you eat’ since you were a little kid. It’s true that if you eat lots of leafy greens, drink 2 liters of water and cut out processed food that you feel and look a heck of a lot better than if your diet consists of fast food and diet soda! This is just common sense that is based on scientific evidence.

Just like the food we eat determines how healthy we look and feel, what we think about also shapes our reality. If you are positive and believe you can do something with all your heart the probability that you will be able to do it are extremely high. On the other hand, if you think odds are stacked against you, competition is too fierce and that you just don’t have what it takes you will prove yourself right over and over again.

Our thoughts hold so much power and are constantly shaping what we see in front of us and how we feel inside. This is why it is so important to be conscious and present when you are planning what you want to achieve in your business. Your thoughts are continuously shaping how much money you make, how many customers you have and the opportunities that come knocking on your door.

Deciding what you want out of your business and your life needs to be taken seriously. Otherwise it will be very easy to get off coarse and end up where you don’t want to go. Luckily, choosing where you want and how to get there is a whole lot easier than you would imagine. It just takes some forethought, clarity and excitement! Plus this is the perfect time of year to create a plan of action and put it into motion.

I can’t believe March is almost here. Pretty soon the gorgeous cherry blossoms will be blooming, the trees will be covered in electric green buds and the birds will be chirping up a storm! I love spring because everything is so fresh a new and it is such a relief that the long winter is finally over.

Spring is also a fabulous time to clean up your external and internal space. What do I mean by internal space? Well, I really believe that what you think about most shapes your reality.

If your thoughts are loving, joyful and inspired chances are everything in your life is pretty awesome too. On the other hand, if you are constantly worried, fearful and negative I bet your world is pretty grim.

Cleaning up your internal space is the most important thing you can do to generate more success, happiness and love. Because I know sometimes this can be tricky to do on your own I have created Spring Cha Ching. This is a step-by-step guide on how to sweep away limiting beliefs just like you would dust bunnies! My big secret to growing my business

In August 2011 I was clicking around on the interwebs when I stumbled upon a post on Danielle LaPorte’s site for an event she was speaking at called Rich, Happy & Hot Live in NYC. The name alone enticed me to check it out, plus Danielle had coached my brother and I with Make It and I knew she only spoke at quality events. After watching the short video of 300 women dancing around having the time of their lives, I immediately I knew Marie Forleo was someone I needed to meet!After a few days contemplating if I could take the time in late October to go to New York and spend the $1500 to attend RHH Live, I decided to just go for it. And I am SOOOOO happy I did! That 3 day event changed my business and my life forever.Towards the end of RHH Live Marie told us about her Adventure Mastermind program that gave 20 women the opportunity to work with her one on one for an entire year. There were also 3 retreats where the 20 women would hang out with Marie and get super focused on taking our business and lives to the next level. What I learned from Oprah

I was beyond excited when my sweet boyfriend bought me a ticket to see Oprah in Vancouver. I couldn’t have asked for a better gift…major score for Neil! Like many of you, I grew up watching Oprah and learned so much about life, spirit and love from her show. Her way of communicating is so easily relatable and personable, it’s no wonder she has been able to build an empire.

All last week I was counting down to Thursday night because I knew whatever Oprah was going to tell us would be jam packed with wisdom and inspiration. And she did not disappoint! From start to finish (over 2 hours), Oprah delivered a sermon that not only put life into clear perspective, but also offered simple guideline to living life to the fullest. I sat there like a thirsty sponge and drank it all in.

There were countless nuggets of golden wisdom, but these are my 3 favourites:

Preparation + opportunity = luck…or what we perceive to be luck. This means that if we are not prepared and open to good things coming into our lives, the opportunity will just pass. Maybe we will realize it and maybe we won’t. As an example, if you want a profitable and successful business you have to be prepared and ready to let it happen.

Listen to the whispers. When something just doesn’t feel right, acknowledge it. Explore that feeling and listen to what your gut is telling you. The universe tells us things all the time, but many people are too unconscious to hear it until it hits them over the head with a 2 by 4! You can save so much time and heartache if you just listen the first time.

Being of service to others is the most important calling in life. Figure out how to get paid for doing something you love. Oprah is probably the best example of this. She does what she loves, serves millions of people and gets paid a fat paycheck for it! Focus on what gifts you can contribute to others and everything else will fall into place.

Just writing this out makes me feel buzzy and glowy inside! I hope that it will inspire you too. It feels so fantastic to be reminded that anything is possible if we allow and decide it to be. Holding back your gifts and talents from the world serves no one. Be open and pursue what you were put on this Earth to do, baby!

Make It University will be celebrating its one-year birthday this March! Almost a year ago this time, I told my coach Marie Forleo about my idea to help creative entrepreneurs become super successful doing what they are passionate about. At the time I knew hardly anything about online education and e-courses, but a year later here we are! It has all gone by so quickly and I have learned a ton.
